After doing some reading,
it looks like this varies wildly on a case by case basis and on the needs of the family. With that said, I'd still like to post to see if there's any discussion around it. My partner and I are expecting in Jan, neither of us have any chronic illnesses or are on any medications.
We both work full time and have benefits through our employer. Does it make sense for one of us to opt out of their benefits and the other to get extended coverage for each other and our newborn? Is that what typically people do? Or should we both maintain our coverage and one of us switch theirs to family?
